Overview

The RIIWHS204E - Work Safely at Heights course is designed to equip participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights in various industries. This nationally accredited training course ensures that individuals understand the hazards associated with working at heights and know how to implement appropriate safety measures to protect themselves and others.

Throughout the course, participants will learn to assess risks, select and use the correct safety equipment, and follow safe work practices to minimize the likelihood of accidents.

This training is essential for anyone involved in construction, maintenance, and other industries where working at heights is a common requirement.

Content

Introduction to Working Safely at Heights

  • Understand the risks and hazards of working at heights.

  • Identify relevant Australian Standards and regulations regarding working at heights.

  • Recognise the importance of fall prevention and fall arrest systems.

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

  • Identify potential hazards related to working at heights (e.g., unstable surfaces, weather conditions, equipment failure).

  • Conduct risk assessments to evaluate and mitigate risks before work begins.

  • Implement control measures to prevent accidents (e.g., exclusion zones, warning signs, barricades).

Selecting and Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Understand the different types of PPE required for working at heights (e.g., harnesses, lanyards, helmets).

  • Demonstrate correct fitting and use of fall protection equipment.

  • Inspect and maintain PPE to ensure it is safe and functional.

Safe Use of Equipment

  • Safely use ladders, scaffolds, and other height-access equipment.

  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the use and maintenance of height access equipment.

Safe Work Practices and Procedures

  • Understand and apply safe work procedures for working at heights.

  • Ensure proper communication and supervision when working at heights.

  • Implement safety measures when working in confined spaces or near edges.

Emergency and Rescue Procedures

  • Recognise the need for emergency procedures and fall protection plans.

  • Demonstrate how to respond to fall incidents and other emergencies.

  • Understanding the role and importance of having a rescue plan and the various requirements involved.

Reporting and Documentation

  • Complete necessary documentation, such as safe work method statements (SWMS).

  • Report hazards, incidents, or near misses to relevant authorities.

  • Maintain and review records to improve safety practices.

Entry Requirements

To participate in the course when you arrive, you must:

  • Provide Photo ID

  • Provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number

  • Wear required PPE detailed below

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Enclosed steel-cap or other suitable work boots

  • Suitable work shorts or pants

  • Hi-vis shirt or vest

* Your participation in the course may be cancelled or postponed if PPE requirements are not met.


Course Completion

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify and assess potential hazards associated with working at heights.

  • Select and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Apply safety procedures and risk control measures when working at height.

  • Safely use equipment such as ladders, scaffolds, and elevated work platforms (EWPs).

  • Respond effectively in case of an emergency or fall incident.

Expiration

While a working safely at heights ticket doesn't technically expire, industry standards recommend that workers renew their training every two years.

This is to ensure workers are up to date on the latest regulations and best practices for working in confined spaces.
