Overview

The White Card course, also known as Construction Induction Training, covers essential workplace health and safety practices required for working on construction sites in Australia.

The course educates participants on identifying common hazards, assessing risks, and implementing safe work practices to ensure the safety of workers.

Key topics include understanding the legal responsibilities under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), emergency response procedures, and effective communication on site. It also emphasises the importance of environmental awareness and adhering to construction site safety regulations, preparing workers to contribute to a safe and compliant construction environment.

It is a legal requirement for all workers to complete the White Card course to be allowed entry onto construction sites, and is applicable for anyone who plans to work on a construction site in the Northern Territory, including:

  • Labourers

  • Tradespeople

  • Supervisors

  • Project managers

  • Other construction workers

Content

The training covers essential safety protocols, knowledge, and skills necessary to work safely on construction sites. The key topics include:

  1. Workplace Safety:

    • Understanding the role of safety on construction sites.

    • Identifying common hazards on construction sites.

    • Understanding risks related to work areas, tools, and equipment.

  2. Workplace Health and Safety (WHS):

    • Legal requirements under the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Act and regulations.

    • Understanding duty of care and responsibilities for safety at work.

    • Safety reporting and incident response procedures.

  3. Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment:

    • Techniques for identifying hazards.

    • Procedures for assessing and controlling risks.

    • Safe work practices and emergency response protocols.

  4. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):

    • Importance of PPE in protecting against workplace hazards.

    • How to use and maintain common types of PPE used on construction sites.

  5. Emergency Procedures:

    • Evacuation plans, first aid, and dealing with accidents on site.

    • Identifying and reporting emergency situations.

  6. Workplace Communication:

    • Effective communication methods to ensure safety.

    • Understanding signage, warnings, and instructions specific to the construction site.

  7. Environmental Awareness:

    • Environmental considerations and sustainability on construction sites.

    • Waste management and pollution prevention.

Entry Requirements

To participate in the course when you arrive, you must:

  • Provide Photo ID

  • Provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number

  • Wear required PPE detailed below

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Enclosed steel-cap or other suitable work boots

  • Suitable work shorts or pants

  • Hi-vis shirt or vest

* Your participation in the course may be cancelled or postponed if PPE requirements are not met.


Course Completion

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment.

A separate application for the Northern Territory White Card is required and the CfAT Training team will provide you with this form.

Within 60 days of completing the course, you will need to submit the form with your Statement of Attainment, ID, and payment ($28) to the Territory Business Centre to receive your White Card.

Expiration

White cards do not have an expiration date, as long as you are continuously working in the construction industry.

However, if you have not done construction work for 2 years or more, NT WorkSafe recommends you attend another course to update and refresh your skills and knowledge.
