Overview
The MSMWHS217 – Gas Test Atmospheres course equips participants with the skills and knowledge to safely conduct gas testing in workplace environments. This nationally accredited training is essential for individuals working in confined spaces or areas where hazardous gases may be present. It is designed to ensure compliance with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) regulations and industry standards.
Participants will learn to test and monitor atmospheric conditions using specialized gas detection equipment, interpret results, and take appropriate action to maintain a safe working environment. This course is particularly relevant for workers in construction, mining, oil and gas, and other industries where exposure to hazardous gases is a risk.
Content
Introduction to Gas Testing
Understand the purpose and importance of gas testing in workplace safety.
Identify common gases and their hazards in various work environments.
Recognize the risks associated with working in confined or hazardous spaces.
Legislation and Safety Standards
Understand WHS regulations and Australian Standards relevant to gas testing.
Learn the roles and responsibilities of personnel conducting gas tests.
Ensure compliance with workplace safety policies and procedures.
Gas Detection Equipment
Learn the types, functions, and limitations of gas detection devices.
Conduct pre-use checks and calibrate gas testing equipment.
Understand sensor capabilities and limitations for detecting specific gases.
Conducting Gas Tests
Perform atmospheric testing in confined spaces and other hazardous environments.
Detect the presence of flammable, toxic, and oxygen-deficient gases.
Understand and apply safe sampling techniques for accurate readings.
Interpreting and Responding to Test Results
Interpret gas test readings and determine if atmospheric conditions are safe.
Take corrective actions if unsafe conditions are identified.
Communicate test results effectively to relevant personnel.
Emergency Procedures
Respond to gas-related emergencies, including high-risk or unsafe readings.
Implement evacuation procedures and other safety measures.

Wear required PPE detailed below
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Enclosed steel-cap or other suitable work boots
Suitable work shorts or pants
Hi-vis shirt or vest
* Your participation in the course may be cancelled or postponed if PPE requirements are not met.
Course Completion
Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment.
Participants will be able to:
Conduct gas testing in a variety of workplace environments.
Use gas detection equipment correctly, including calibration and pre-use checks.
Identify and respond to hazardous atmospheric conditions.
Interpret gas test readings and communicate results effectively.
Follow workplace procedures to maintain safety and address emergencies.

Expiration
The MSMWHS217 certification does not have a nationally mandated expiry. However, refresher training is recommended every two years or as required by workplace or industry standards to ensure ongoing competence and compliance.
