Overview
The TLILIC0003 - Licence to Operate a Forklift Truck course is designed to provide participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift truck safely and efficiently in a variety of industries. This nationally accredited training ensures that individuals understand the hazards associated with forklift operation and how to implement appropriate safety measures to protect themselves, their colleagues, and the workplace.
Throughout the course, participants will learn to operate a forklift truck in compliance with Australian Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) regulations, perform pre-operational checks, and manage load handling in a safe manner. This training is essential for workers in sectors such as construction, warehousing, logistics, and manufacturing, where forklift trucks are used to move goods or materials.

Introduction to Forklift Truck Operation
Understand the basic functions and components of a forklift truck.
Identify the types of forklifts and their specific uses in various industries.
Recognize the risks and hazards associated with forklift operation.
Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Requirements
Understand the relevant Australian Standards and regulations governing forklift operation.
Learn about safe work practices and the responsibilities of forklift operators in maintaining a safe work environment.
Ensure compliance with workplace safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Pre-Operational Checks
Conduct a thorough pre-operational check on a forklift to ensure it is in safe working condition.
Identify and report faults or defects in forklift machinery.
Understand the importance of regular maintenance and servicing to ensure the ongoing safety of forklift operations.
Forklift Handling and Operation
Safely operate a forklift truck in a range of environments, including indoors and outdoors.
Load, unload, and stack materials safely, following industry best practices.
Maneuver the forklift in tight spaces, ensuring proper clearance and stability.
Perform various lifting and lowering tasks, while maintaining balance and control.
Load Handling and Stability
Understand the principles of load stability and how to safely transport loads of various weights and sizes.
Use proper load-handling techniques to avoid injury or equipment damage.
Safely handle different types of materials and containers, including hazardous and irregularly shaped items.
Forklift Operation in Different Environments
Operate a forklift in a variety of work environments such as warehouses, construction sites, and outdoor areas.
Adapt operation techniques to different surfaces, weather conditions, and obstacles.
Navigate ramps, slopes, and uneven terrain safely.
Forklift Safety and Emergency Procedures
Understand the importance of maintaining a safe speed and distance when operating a forklift.
Respond appropriately in emergency situations, including forklift accidents, spills, or hazardous situations.
Perform an emergency stop and ensure safe operation during high-risk situations.
Reporting and Documentation
Complete required documentation, such as forklift operation logs and inspection records.
Report any incidents, defects, or near misses to the appropriate personnel.
Maintain records in accordance with workplace safety policies and regulatory requirements.

Entry Requirements
To participate in the course when you arrive, you must:
Provide Photo ID
Provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number
visit www.usi.gov.au to obtain a USI
Wear required PPE detailed below
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Enclosed steel-cap or other suitable work boots
Suitable work shorts or pants
Hi-vis shirt or vest
* Your participation in the course may be cancelled or postponed if PPE requirements are not met.
Course Completion
To operate a forklift in the Northern Territory, you will also need to apply for a High Risk Work licence in addition to your training.
NT WorkSafe issues the Northern Territory High Risk Work licence through the Territory Business Centre.
This requires the completion of a separate application form - the CfAT Training team will provide this form to you.
You must then present this form, with;
your HRW license assessment report (from the assessor)
Photo ID
Passport sized photo and
Payment (currently $83)
within 60 days to the Territory Business Centre to receive your High Risk Work licence.
Participants will be able to:
Safely operate a forklift truck, following safe work practices and safety regulations.
Conduct pre-operational checks and report faults or defects.
Handle and transport loads of various sizes and weights safely.
Navigate a forklift in different environments, including tight spaces and uneven surfaces.
Respond appropriately in emergency situations and comply with reporting procedures.
Expiration
Your High Risk Work licence will be valid for 5 years from the issue date.
You will have 12 months from the expiry date to renew your licence.
If you do not renew the licence within 12 months, you will be required to take the course again.
