Overview
The RIIHAN301E – Operate Elevating Work Platform course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge required to operate elevating work platforms (EWPs) effectively and safely. This nationally accredited training ensures compliance with Australian Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) regulations and prepares individuals to work at heights in industries such as construction, warehousing, maintenance, and utilities.
Participants will gain hands-on experience operating a range of EWPs, including scissor lifts and boom lifts, while learning to assess risks, manage loads, and implement safe work practices. Successful completion of this course equips participants to meet industry standards and workplace safety requirements.
Content
Introduction to Elevating Work Platforms (EWP)
Understand the purpose, types, and applications of EWPs, including scissor lifts and boom lifts.
Recognize the risks and hazards associated with operating EWPs.
Learn about the features and capabilities of different EWPs.
Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) Requirements
Understand WHS legislation and standards related to operating EWPs.
Learn safe work practices and the responsibilities of operators in maintaining a safe work environment.
Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during EWP operation.
Pre-Operational Checks and Maintenance
Conduct comprehensive pre-operational inspections and function tests.
Identify faults, defects, or maintenance needs and report them according to workplace procedures.
Understand the importance of routine servicing and equipment maintenance.
Operating the Elevating Work Platform
Safely operate EWPs in a range of work environments, including confined spaces and outdoor areas.
Maneuver and position the platform effectively for various tasks.
Use platform controls to safely lift, lower, and position the work platform.
Load Handling and Stability
Assess load capacity and ensure stability during operation.
Safely transport tools and materials while maintaining balance.
Recognize environmental factors that may impact platform stability, such as wind and uneven surfaces.
Emergency Procedures
Respond to emergencies, including platform malfunctions and incidents at height.
Perform emergency lowering procedures safely.
Familiarize with emergency rescue protocols and equipment.
Reporting and Documentation
Complete operational logs and pre-inspection checklists.
Report incidents, faults, and near misses according to workplace and regulatory requirements.
Maintain accurate records in compliance with WHS standards.

* Your participation in the course may be cancelled or postponed if PPE requirements are not met.
Course Completion
Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment.
Participants will be able to:
Operate elevating work platforms (EWPs), such as scissor lifts and boom lifts, safely and efficiently.
Conduct pre-operational checks and report any defects or maintenance issues.
Safely maneuver, position, and operate EWPs in a variety of environments.
Manage load stability and transport materials safely on the platform.
Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including platform malfunctions or incidents at height.
Complete required documentation, including operation logs and inspection reports.
Expiration
The RIIHAN301E certification does not have a nationally set expiry, but refresher training is recommended periodically to ensure ongoing competence and compliance with regulatory and workplace safety standards. Employers may require updates or reassessments to align with their safety protocols.
