Overview

RIIMPO319E - Conduct Backhoe/Loader Operations is a nationally accredited course designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate a backhoe or loader safely and effectively in civil construction and related industries. This course focuses on ensuring operators can handle machinery confidently while adhering to safety standards and operational guidelines.

Participants will learn essential procedures, including pre-operational checks, load handling, and maintenance, preparing them for roles in construction, earthmoving, and landscaping projects.

Content

Planning and Preparation

  • Assess worksite conditions and plan for backhoe/loader operations.

  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification.

  • Ensure necessary resources and equipment are in place.

Pre-Operational Checks

  • Perform machine inspections to ensure functionality and safety.

  • Identify and address mechanical issues before operation.

Operation of Backhoe/Loader

  • Operate equipment for lifting, carrying, and placing materials.

  • Maneuver machinery in various worksite conditions.

  • Utilize attachments for specialized tasks, ensuring correct installation and removal.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Apply workplace health and safety (WHS) protocols.

  • Follow safe operational techniques to minimize risks to operators and bystanders.

Machine Maintenance and Shutdown

  • Perform routine maintenance tasks and minor repairs.

  • Shut down equipment following proper procedures.

  • Clear and clean the worksite after operations.

Environmental Considerations

  • Dispose of or recycle materials in compliance with environmental guidelines.

  • Minimize environmental impact through proper operational practices.

5 days (approx. 7 Hours each day)

Entry Requirements

To participate in the course when you arrive, you must:

  • Provide Photo ID

  • Provide your Unique Student Identifier (USI) Number

  • Wear required PPE detailed below

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Enclosed steel-cap or other suitable work boots

  • Suitable work shorts or pants

  • Hi-vis shirt or vest

* Your participation in the course may be cancelled or postponed if PPE requirements are not met.


Course Completion

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Participants will be able to:

  • Safely operate a backhoe or loader in compliance with WHS regulations.

  • Perform pre-operational checks and identify potential mechanical issues.

  • Lift, carry, and position materials accurately and safely.

  • Use and maintain attachments for various tasks.

  • Conduct routine maintenance and safely shut down equipment.

  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety standards during operations.

Expiration

The RIIMPO319E – Conduct Backhoe/Loader Operations course certification does not have a formal expiration date in most cases. However, the requirement for refresher training or re-assessment depends on industry standards, employer policies, or specific jobsite requirements.
