Training Services Overview

The Centre for Appropriate Technology Limited (CfAT Ltd) is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), number 0857 offering nationally recognised certificate courses in automotive, construction, civil construction, essential services, rural operations, water operations and engineering. Our training programs aim to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gain skills and qualifications for employment and career progression in regional and remote areas. CfAT Ltd has fully equipped metal, woodwork and automotive workshops located at the Desert Peoples Centre premises within the Desert Knowledge Precinct, South Stuart Highway, Alice Springs.

Government subsidies for training programs vary by State and Territory jurisdictions. Government subsidised training places are generally available to those without a qualification up to a certificate III level, especially for those referred through an employment service provider. There may be subsidies available to employers to support the cost of training their employees, however employers are usually expected to contribute to the cost of training.

Certificate I in Automotive Vocational Preparation AUR10116

The certificate I in automotive vocational preparation offers entry-level training for those working or seeking to work in any of the automotive sectors covered by this Training Package, including:

  • bicycle
  • automotive electrical
  • outdoor power equipment
  • light vehicle
  • motorcycle
  • marine
  • heavy vehicle

Learners may undertake a range of simple tasks under close supervision. The qualification targets introductory automotive retain, service and report employment. It may also be suitable for cadetship, or part time and casual employment positions where a full range of skills are not required.

Further training pathways from this qualification include any certificate II qualification within the AUR automotive industry retail, service and repair training package or other relevant qualifications.

Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation       AUR20716

The Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation prepares prospective employees to undertake work in the broader automotive industry. Job roles related to this qualification include:

  • trades assistant
  • vehicle service assistant
  • automotive service assistant
  • trainee service person
  • automotive trainee

This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a limited range of tasks related to familiarisation and inspection of mechanical and electrical components and systems of cars, heavy vehicles, outdoor power equipment, bicycles, marine craft and motorcycles.

This qualification also covers the skills and knowledge required to perform minor maintenance and repair of an automotive vehicle body, and also provides individuals with an introduction to the automotive industry as well as some of the basic skills needed. It is an appropriate level for an individual undertaking work experience or in a probationary period in employment.

Credit may be granted towards this qualification by those who have completed AIR10116 certificate I in automotive vocational preparation or other relevant qualifications.

Further training pathways from this qualification include AUR training package certificate III qualifications or other relevant qualifications.

Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology       AUR20516

The Certificate II in Automotive Servicing Technology develops the skills and capabilities of new or existing workers to perform servicing & maintenance of vehicles in an auto services or repair business. Employment outcomes targeted by this qualification include:

• automotive serviceperson

This qualification covers the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of servicing operations on light vehicles, heavy vehicles and/or motorcycles within an automotive service or repair business.

Credit may be granted towards this qualification by those who have completed AUR10116 Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation or other relevant qualifications.

Further training pathways from this qualification include AUR30616 Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology or other relevant qualifications.
