Have you heard the Bushlight story in your community lately?

Bushlight (the Centre for Appropriate Technology) worked with remote communities all across South Australia, from Yalata to Oak Valley and across the APY Lands, spreading the news about using power safely. Turning off appliances also helps save power and helps the power stations run well.

Trevor Adamson from Pukatja (Ernabella) translated/spoke this into Pitjantjatjara and it has been played on community radio. Have a listen, and for those of us who don’t speak Pitjantjatjara, here is the English translation.

For more information about the South Australia energy efficiency project, you can read the final report here on the CfAT website.

Turn off switches when leaving the house. This is an important Powerku Tjukurpa [Power Story] from the Bushlight people. Appliances, air con and lights are greedy for power. They are dangerous left alone. Kids can remember this too.

Before you leave, stop and:

  • Turn off appliances at the power point (TV, Microwave, Kettle, Radio, Toaster)
  • Turn off the heater
  • Turn off the Air con- (Air con)
  • Turn off all the Lights
  • Check that the oven is off

Be safe & save diesel. Turn off switches when you leave your house.
